# DDL statements

Use the supported data definition language (DDL) statements presented here directly in Athena. The Athena query engine is based in part on [HiveQL DDL](https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/LanguageManual+DDL). Athena does not support all DDL statements, and there are some differences between HiveQL DDL and Athena DDL.
