# $documentNumber

The `$documentNumber` window operator in Amazon DocumentDB returns a distinct sequential number for each document in its partition, according to the `$setWindowFields` stage `sortBy` order. Unlike `$rank` and `$denseRank`, it does not treat ties specially: every document receives a unique number (for example, `1, 2, 3, 4`), and documents with equal `sortBy` values are numbered in the order they are encountered. It is specified under the `output` field of the `$setWindowFields` stage.

It is a window operator that is used only in the `$setWindowFields` stage.

**Parameters**
+ `$documentNumber` takes an empty document `{}` as its value.
+ It does not accept a `window` frame.
+ It requires exactly one `sortBy` key in the `$setWindowFields` stage.

The following example partitions the documents by `game`, sorts each partition by `score` in descending order, and assigns each player a sequential document number.

**Create sample documents**

Within each `game` partition, each player receives a distinct sequential number in descending `score` order. Bob and Carol tie at `85` but are still numbered `2` and `3` in the order they are encountered.
