Release: Elastic Beanstalk launches Amazon Linux 2023 new platform releases and updates on October 19, 2023

Elastic Beanstalk releases new Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) platform branches for ECS, Go, Corretto, Tomcat, .NET Core, and Ruby. This release also provides new versions for the Docker, Coretto, Tomcat, Node.js, PHP, and Python platforms based on Amazon Linux 2023. The release includes security updates, AMI updates, and Graviton support for two regions.

Today we’re releasing seven new Elastic Beanstalk platform branches based on Amazon Linux 2023.   • These release notes focus on changes to currently supported platform branches. For full version information of Elastic Beanstalk retiring (deprecated) platform branches, see Elastic Beanstalk platform versions scheduled for retirement in the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Platforms guide.

  • Be aware that at the time these release notes are published, the new platform versions might not yet be available in all the AWS Regions that Elastic Beanstalk supports. It might take a few hours for the release to complete.

Security updates

Applied all security updates published in the Amazon Linux Security Center on or before October 16, 2023 to all AL2023 platforms.

Component Update

AMI

Updated the base AMI to version 2023.2.20231016.

nginx

All AL2023 platforms, except for ECS, currently run nginx server version 1.24.0, which is a more recent version than the current nginx 1.22.1 version running on AL2 platforms. This includes both the new and existing AL2023 platform branches.

Graviton Support

Starting with this release, Elastic Beanstalk adds support for Graviton on all of the latest Amazon Linux 2023 platforms in the following regions:

  • Africa (Cape Town) – af-south-1

  • Asia Pacific (Osaka) – ap-northeast-3

AWS Graviton is an arm64 processor that offers up to 40% better price-performance over comparable x86 based processors. To learn more about Graviton arm64 processor architecture, see The AWS Graviton Processor website and Getting started with AWS Graviton in the AWS GitHub repository.

Docker

**New!** — Introduced a new ECS platform branch running on AL2023.

Docker platform branch

  • Updated Docker Engine to version 24.0.5-1.

  • Updated Docker Compose to version 2.22.0.

Additional changes to Docker platform branch with the release:

  • This release adds --ignore-buildable to the docker compose pull command to prevent an issue with pulling images that need a building process with Docker Compose v2. For more information see docker compose pull in the Docker reference documentation.

  • This release prevents deployments from being reported as successful if the container does not start up successfully or unexpectedly stops.

  • This release addresses an issue where the Elastic Beanstalk log file could be appended with duplicate information that's already been logged, on logging restart after the logging process previously failed.

  • This release limits the amount of times docker compose logging will attempt to restart on failure.

Go

**New!** — Introduced a new Go 1 platform branch running on AL2023:

Corretto

**New!** — Introduced two new Corretto platform branches running on AL2023:
