

# StartTransaction
<a name="API_StartTransaction"></a>

Starts a new transaction and returns its transaction ID. Transaction IDs are opaque objects that you can use to identify a transaction.

## Request Syntax

## URI Request Parameters

The request does not use any URI parameters.

## Request Body
<a name="API_StartTransaction_RequestBody"></a>

The request accepts the following data in JSON format.

 ** [TransactionType](#API_StartTransaction_RequestSyntax) **   <a name="lakeformation-StartTransaction-request-TransactionType"></a>
Indicates whether this transaction should be read only or read and write. Writes made using a read-only transaction ID will be rejected. Read-only transactions do not need to be committed.   
Type: String  
Valid Values: `READ_AND_WRITE | READ_ONLY`   
Required: No

If the action is successful, the service sends back an HTTP 200 response.

The following data is returned in JSON format by the service.

An opaque identifier for the transaction.  
Type: String  
Length Constraints: Minimum length of 1. Maximum length of 255.  
Pattern: `[\p{L}\p{N}\p{P}]*`
