Responder gateways
Responder gateways are RTB Fabric infrastructure components that serve as connection points for customer gateways. Responder gateways receive requests from requester gateways and forward them to responder gateways, then return responses through the same pathway. Gateways operate colocated with your VPC and provide routing, load balancing, and processing capabilities. You maintain complete control over your bidding algorithms, response logic, and data processing, while RTB Fabric provides the secure infrastructure for connectivity.

Creating a responder gateway
Create a new responder gateway that can respond to bid opportunities.
Note
You are responsible for the data you process through RTB Fabric, including ensuring that personally identifiable information (PII) is handled according to your privacy requirements and applicable regulations.
To create a responder gateway

Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the RTB Fabric console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/rtbfabric

In the navigation pane, choose Responder gateway.

Choose Create responder gateway.

In the Responder gateway information section, for Gateway description, enter a description of the gateway's purpose. The description can have up to 255 characters.

In the VPC configuration section, configure the network settings:

For VPC ID, enter a valid VPC ID. For example: vpc-01f345ad6524a6d7.

For Subnet ID, enter the IDs of 1-5 subnets, separated by commas. Subnets must have at least 200 free IP addresses. These subnets should match your core workload deployment subnets or be secondary CIDR subnets within the same Availability Zones.

For Security group ID, enter the IDs of 1-5 security groups, separated by commas. We recommend you create new security groups for your gateways for security.

In the Responder endpoint configuration section, choose an endpoint type from the dropdown and configure the fields for that type:

Domain name — Configure a direct endpoint using a domain name.

For Domain name, enter a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) where you want your gateway to be accessed. Valid characters are a-z, A-Z, 0-9, periods (.), and hyphens (-). Maximum length is 253 characters.

For Port number, enter the network port number where your gateway will listen for incoming traffic. Enter an integer from 1 to 65535. Common ports are 80 and 443.

For Protocol, select either HTTP or HTTPS.

(HTTPS only) For CA certificate chain, enter the CA certificate chain for your domain. Include the intermediate and root certificates as base64-encoded Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM).

EKS — Configure a managed endpoint that points to a Kubernetes cluster.

For EKS Endpoints resource name, enter the name of the Kubernetes Endpoints resource. Must be a DNS label with a maximum of 63 characters.

For EKS Endpoints resource namespace, enter the Kubernetes namespace where the Endpoints resource is located.

For Cluster API server endpoint URI, enter the EKS cluster API server endpoint URL. Must be a valid URI.

For Cluster API server CA certificate, enter the base64-encoded CA certificate chain for the EKS API server.

For Cluster name, enter the name of the EKS cluster.

For IAM role, select an IAM role with
ec2:DescribeSubnetspermission that is associated with EKS RBAC. -
For Port number, enter the network port number. Enter an integer from 1 to 65535.

Choose Create Gateway.

Your new responder gateway appears in the gateways list with an Activating status. The gateway status will remain Activating for 20-40 minutes until creation is complete.
After creating your gateway, you can view its details, monitor performance metrics, and make configuration changes as needed.
Use the following command to create a responder gateway using the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).
Create a responder gateway with domain name and trust store configuration
The certificateAuthorityCertificates value is base64-encoded PEM. To encode a PEM file, run base64 -w0 ca.pem on Linux or base64 -i ca.pem on macOS. A real value is long and contains base64 padding characters (=) that conflict with the shorthand key=value syntax. Put the input in a JSON file and pass it with --cli-input-json instead. Save the following as create-gateway.json:

Logging
When logging is configured, default sampling behavior applies. Service logs capture all error logs (error_log sampling rate of 1) and no filter logs (filter_log sampling rate of 0). To modify sampling rates after creation, see UpdateLink in the AWS RTB Fabric API Reference.
Creating an external responder gateway
Create an external responder gateway in RTB Fabric if you do not already have one. Inbound external links with custom domains require an external gateway — a gateway type designed for receiving traffic from endpoints outside RTB Fabric. Standard (internal) responder gateways do not support inbound external links with custom domains features such as certificate association and routing rules.
To create an external responder gateway

Follow the same steps as Creating a responder gateway, but on the creation page, select the External gateway tile instead of the default gateway type.

Complete the remaining configuration fields as described in the standard gateway creation procedure.
Listener configuration
A listener configuration defines which protocols a gateway with external links accepts for incoming traffic. By default, a gateway listens on a single protocol (HTTPS). With multiprotocol support, you can configure a gateway to accept both HTTP and HTTPS traffic simultaneously using the listenerConfig parameter.
The listenerConfig contains a protocols list that specifies one or two protocols:
["HTTPS"]— The gateway accepts HTTPS traffic only (default).["HTTP", "HTTPS"]— The gateway accepts both HTTP and HTTPS traffic.
Multi-protocol support is useful when you need to support partners that send traffic over HTTP while also serving HTTPS traffic with TLS termination. When both protocols are enabled, the gateway provisions listeners for each protocol on the public ingress cluster.
Note
If you enable both HTTP and HTTPS, TLS certificate association and SNI-based certificate resolution apply only to HTTPS connections. HTTP connections bypass TLS termination entirely.

When using

The domain name must be allowlisted by the RTB Fabric team for your account before you can create your gateway. Contact AWS Support to request domain name allowlisting. The role used for managed endpoint must have RTBFabricManagedEndpoint=true tag.--protocol—HTTPorHTTPS. Choose based on whether you want TLS termination at the gateway.--port— The port the gateway listens on (for example,80for HTTP or443for HTTPS).
Record the gateway endpoint hostname (for example, rtb-gw-abc123.123456789012.gateway.rtbfabric.us-east-1.amazonaws.com). You need this value when updating DNS records to route traffic through your custom domain.
Configuring Availability Zone affinity
Requester gateways send traffic to a responder gateway. The client routing policy of the responder gateway controls which Availability Zones RTB Fabric uses to reach it. You set the client routing policy when you create a responder gateway. You can also change it later, while the gateway is in the ACTIVE state.
The client routing policy that you choose affects latency and capacity. Keeping requests inside the requester's own Availability Zone avoids the network latency of crossing an Availability Zone boundary. Using every Availability Zone that the responder gateway spans gives each requester access to more gateway capacity.
Choose one of the following client routing policies:
AVAILABILITY_ZONE_AFFINITY(default)-
RTB Fabric routes each requester's traffic to gateway capacity in the requester's own Availability Zone, when the gateway has capacity available there. Otherwise, RTB Fabric routes the traffic to gateway capacity in the gateway's other Availability Zones. Those requests cross an Availability Zone boundary. A gateway whose subnets span a single Availability Zone serves every requester from that one Availability Zone. This is the default, and it matches the behavior of gateways created before the client routing policy was introduced.
ANY_AVAILABILITY_ZONE-
RTB Fabric routes each requester's traffic to gateway capacity in every Availability Zone that the gateway's subnets span. The Availability Zone that the requester is in does not change this. Requests that cross an Availability Zone boundary add that boundary's network latency. Your RTB Fabric charges do not depend on which Availability Zone serves a request.
RTB Fabric spreads requests across those Availability Zones based on how much gateway capacity is running in each Availability Zone. RTB Fabric manages that capacity and adjusts it as load changes. The share of traffic that each Availability Zone receives is therefore not even, and it changes over time.
The share does not track the number of targets that you run in each Availability Zone. RTB Fabric also does not move traffic away from an Availability Zone when the targets in that Availability Zone are busy.
Unsupported client routing policies
RTB Fabric supports the two client routing policies described in the preceding list. AVAILABILITY_ZONE_AFFINITY and ANY_AVAILABILITY_ZONE are the only values that RTB Fabric accepts and the only values that it returns. Setting any other client routing policy fails with a ValidationException.
RTB Fabric does not support partial Availability Zone affinity. Under partial affinity, a fixed percentage of requests stay in the requester's own Availability Zone. The rest can go to any Availability Zone. If you are familiar with the client routing policies of a Network Load Balancer, RTB Fabric has no equivalent of its partial_availability_zone_affinity policy.
Prerequisites for Availability Zone affinity
A service quota for your account sets the number of Availability Zones that the subnets of a gateway can span. By default, this quota is one Availability Zone. To span more Availability Zones, request a quota increase. For more information about quotas, see Quotas for AWS RTB Fabric.
Setting ANY_AVAILABILITY_ZONE on a gateway whose subnets span a single Availability Zone succeeds and does not change how traffic reaches the gateway. To get the behavior described for ANY_AVAILABILITY_ZONE, create the gateway with subnets in more than one Availability Zone.
Capacity planning for Availability Zone affinity
Scale the targets in each Availability Zone independently. Give each Availability Zone enough capacity to serve more than an even share of your traffic.
Avoid scaling on a signal that aggregates data across your Availability Zones, such as average CPU utilization. An average hides which Availability Zone is over its share. The Availability Zones that receive less traffic dilute the average. An Availability Zone can be close to its limit while the average stays below your scaling threshold.
Uneven capacity across Availability Zones does not change how RTB Fabric distributes requests. This matters when your deployment tooling places uneven capacity, for example when Amazon EC2 Spot capacity is constrained in one Availability Zone.
What the client routing policy does not control
The client routing policy controls how requester gateways reach this responder gateway. It does not change how the responder gateway reaches your own capacity. RTB Fabric prefers managed endpoint targets in the gateway's Availability Zone. When no target is available in that Availability Zone, RTB Fabric can use targets in another Availability Zone. For more information about managed endpoints, see Managed endpoints.
Setting the client routing policy
You can set the client routing policy with the RTB Fabric API, the AWS CLI, or an AWS SDK. The console does not display or change the client routing policy.
Note
Changing the client routing policy is an asynchronous operation. The gateway status changes to PENDING_UPDATE and returns to ACTIVE when the change is complete. The previous client routing policy stays in effect until after the gateway returns to ACTIVE. Allow additional time for the change to take effect.
Specifying the client routing policy that the gateway is already set to does not change the status. If a client routing policy has never been set on the gateway, setting AVAILABILITY_ZONE_AFFINITY explicitly starts an update. The gateway's behavior does not change.
To return a gateway to Availability Zone affinity, set AVAILABILITY_ZONE_AFFINITY with UpdateResponderGateway.
To change the client routing policy of a responder gateway that already exists, use the UpdateResponderGateway operation. The following section contains an AWS CLI example that sets the client routing policy of a gateway.

To return the gateway to the default behavior, run the same command with --client-routing-policy AVAILABILITY_ZONE_AFFINITY.
Monitoring Availability Zone affinity
RTB Fabric does not publish an Amazon CloudWatch dimension for Availability Zone. You cannot break down the metrics of a gateway or a link by Availability Zone. RTB Fabric also does not publish a metric for the volume of traffic that crosses an Availability Zone boundary. Searching for responder gateways
Use the search functionality in the console to locate specific gateways in your environment. The gateways table displays key information including gateway ID, status, name, associated links, and creation date.
To search for responder gateways

If no gateways exist, the console displays No responder gateways with an option to create your first gateway.
Updating an existing responder gateway
In the console, you can update the gateway description and the Auto Scaling group managed endpoint configuration. Using the UpdateResponderGateway API, you can also update the client routing policy and the protocols list in the listener configuration, which controls the protocols that a gateway with external links accepts. For more information, see Listener configuration and AWS CLI.
For HTTPS endpoints, you can also rotate the CA certificate chain (trust store) by using the UpdateResponderGateway API. To rotate the trust store without interrupting traffic, see Rotating a responder gateway certificate.
You cannot change the domain name, port, and protocol parameters that you set when you create a responder gateway. To change any of them, delete the gateway and create a new one.
To update a responder gateway

On the Responder gateways page, select the radio button next to the responder gateway you want to update.

Choose View details.

Choose Edit to modify the gateway configuration.

The Edit button is only available for responder gateways that have Auto Scaling group managed endpoints configured.

Update the Gateway description or Auto Scaling group managed endpoint configuration as needed.

Choose Save changes.

Every UpdateResponderGateway request must include the port and protocol, set to the gateway's current values. You cannot change them, and RTB Fabric keeps the stored values.

To rotate the CA certificate chain (trust store), follow the overlapping-rotation procedure in Rotating a responder gateway certificate. On UpdateResponderGateway, you can supply up to two CA certificate chains at a time. With both chains in place, you trust both the outgoing and incoming CA during a transition.
Rotating a responder gateway certificate
For HTTPS responder endpoints, you provide a certificate authority (CA) trust store. RTB Fabric verifies the certificate that your responder origin presents against this trust store. You configure the trust store as the CA certificate chain on the responder endpoint (the trustStoreConfiguration in the API). The trust store is separate from the inbound custom domain certificate that an external gateway presents to partner clients. For more information about the inbound custom domain certificate, see Manage TLS certificates.
Rotate the trust store by using the UpdateResponderGateway operation. Rotate when your origin's certificates approach expiry, or when you change the CA that signs them. On UpdateResponderGateway, you can supply up to two CA certificate chains at a time. With both chains in place, you trust both the outgoing and incoming CA during a transition. CreateResponderGateway accepts a single chain.
Important
Always rotate in overlapping steps. Do not replace the current CA certificate chain with the new one in a single step. If the trust store trusts only the new CA, any origin server still presenting an old CA certificate fails the TLS handshake. Bid requests to those servers then fail. Trust both CAs until every origin server presents the new certificate, and remove the old CA only after that migration completes.
The following table shows the trust store contents at each step of a rotation from an old CA (CA-1) to a new CA (CA-2).

To rotate the CA certificate chain (trust store)

Call
UpdateResponderGatewayand settrustStoreConfiguration.certificateAuthorityCertificatesto both the current CA chain and the new CA chain. The gateway briefly leaves the Active state during the update, and returns to Active when the new trust store is in effect. -
Migrate your origin server fleet to present certificates signed by the new CA. Because both CAs are trusted, your servers can present either certificate during the migration without interruption.

Confirm that every origin server presents a certificate signed by the new CA before you retire the old CA. Monitor your origins for TLS handshake failures during the migration. If handshakes begin to fail, call
UpdateResponderGatewaywith both chains again to restore the old CA while you investigate. -
Call
UpdateResponderGatewaya final time and setcertificateAuthorityCertificatesto the new CA chain only. This retires the old CA.
To confirm which CA certificates are trusted, call GetResponderGateway. The certificateAuthorityCertificates field returns a single element. That element holds all trusted CA certificates concatenated into one base64-encoded chain, even during the overlap window when two CAs are trusted. Decode that element and count the certificate blocks to see the individual CAs. You cannot pass this combined value back into a rotation step, so keep your own copy of each CA certificate chain that you supply. When you retire the old CA, supply the new CA chain on its own.
Note
Each update replaces the trust store with exactly the certificate chains that you send in the request. To retire a CA, send an update that omits it. RTB Fabric does not remove a CA automatically when it expires. An update that repeats the stored certificate chains does not change the gateway. UpdateResponderGateway does not change the endpoint domain, port, or protocol.
The following section provides AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) commands for the rotation.

Getting a responder gateway
Retrieve detailed information about a specific responder gateway, including its configuration, status, VPC settings, and endpoint configuration.

Viewing associated links
Each responder gateway can have associated links that connect it to requester gateways. You can view these links and their details through the console.
To view associated links for a responder gateway

On the Responder gateways page, select the radio button next to the responder gateway you want to view.

Choose View details to see comprehensive information about the gateway, including its configuration, status, and associated resources.

Choose the Associated links tab to view existing links and their details.

Deleting responder gateways
When you no longer need a responder gateway, you can delete it from your environment. This action is irreversible and will terminate all bidding activities associated with the gateway.
We recommend deleting unused responder gateways to optimize resource usage and costs. AWS may delete unused gateways after 30 days of inactivity to manage infrastructure resources.
Warning
Deleting a responder gateway is permanent and cannot be undone. Check your gateway metrics to verify there is no active traffic before proceeding with deletion.
Important
You must delete all associated links before you can delete a responder gateway. If the gateway has any associated links, the deletion will fail.
To delete a responder gateway

On the Responder gateways page, select the radio button next to the responder gateway you want to delete.

Choose Delete from the action buttons at the top of the page.

If the gateway has associated links, a dialog appears with the message "To delete this gateway, you must first delete all of its associated links. You can delete links on the Links table." Follow the provided instructions to delete associated links first, then return to delete the gateway. For more information, see Deleting links.

If the gateway has no associated links, confirm the deletion when prompted.
