## Major updates
<a name="major-updates-2023.6.20250303"></a>

This release represents an update to the 6th quarterly release of AL2023. AL2023 is the next generation of Amazon Linux. It comes with five years of support and brings features such as deterministic updates and better optimizations for Graviton processors into Amazon Linux. AL2023 is ready for production workloads, and you can start migrating from previous versions of Amazon Linux today.

**Notable updates**
+ clamav to clamav1.4 update: The latest version of clamav has been added to the AL2023 core repository in this release. To aid customers in migrating to the latest version, the latest clamav is provided in the clamav1.4 package. In 6 months from this release, installing clamav will install clamav1.4, and it will become the default (target date for transition is around Sept/Oct 2025). The clamav1.4 package will provide new versions of shared libraries, any applications that link to any of the clamav shared libraries will need to be re-linked or rebuilt. The older clamav (v 0.103.12) packages will still be available in the repo after the clamav1.4 packages are made the default, but will not receive further updates or security fixes. To ensure continued security and support, customers should migrate to clamav1.4 immediately.

**Known issues**
+ AL2023 is not yet FIPS certified. AL2023 is in the process of being certified for FIPS 140-3.

## Major updates
<a name="major-updates-2023.6.20250218"></a>

This release represents an update to the sixth quarterly release of AL2023.

+ To better support multiple versions of NodeJS, we are progressively migrating our NodeJS packages to use the `alternatives` system. This will allow multiple versions of NodeJS to be concurrently installed, and provide a single command to select which NodeJS configuration and binaries are used. To support this change, there are changes to the paths for the NodeJS binaries, globally installed NodeJS modules, and configuration files. Existing globally installed modules will be preserved across the update. This change will be non-disruptive for the majority of customers.

This release contains this change to the nodejs package (NodeJS 18).

**Known issues**
+ AL2023 is not yet FIPS certified. AL2023 is in the process of being certified for FIPS 140-3.

**Security updates**
+ For information on the CVEs addressed in this release, see the [Amazon Linux Security Center](https://alas.aws.amazon.com/alas2023.html).
+ For visibility into the status of CVEs that haven't been addressed yet, see the [Amazon Linux Security Center](https://explore.alas.aws.amazon.com/).

## Major updates
<a name="major-updates-2023.6.20250123"></a>

This release represents an update to the sixth quarterly release of AL2023. AL2023 is the next generation of Amazon Linux. It comes with five years of support and brings features such as deterministic updates and better optimizations for Graviton processors into Amazon Linux. AL2023 is ready for production workloads, and you can start migrating from previous versions of Amazon Linux today.

**Known issues**
+ AL2023 is not yet FIPS certified. AL2023 is in the process of being certified for FIPS 140-3.
+ A change to the ansible-core package introduced an issue that causes the `ansible-playbook` command to throw an error when executed. This issue will be resolved in the next AL2023 update.

**Work-Around** - Customers affected by this change can restore the previous `ansible-playbook` behavior until the next update is released by downgrading the `anisble-core` package using the command `sudo dnf install ansible-core-2.15.3-1.amzn2023.0.5`

## Major updates

**Known issues**
+ AL2023 is not yet FIPS certified. AL2023 is in the process of being certified for FIPS 140-3.

**Note**
Amazon Linux 2023 minimal AMIs were incorrectly configured with 8GB root volume by default. We addressed this issue in the 2023.6.20241111.0 release, ensuring that minimal AMIs have a default root volume size of 2GB, consistent with Amazon Linux 2 minimal AMIs. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. These volume sizes will not shrink in any future Amazon Linux 2023 release.

**Security updates**

# Amazon Linux 2023 version 2023.6.20241028 release notes
<a name="relnotes-2023.6.20241028"></a>

**Note**
This release was recalled due to a bug introduced in the `nodejs` package.
The [AL2023.6.20241031](relnotes-2023.6.20241031.md) release was subsequently released with a fix for this issue. The release notes for [AL2023.6.20241031](relnotes-2023.6.20241031.md) include the other changes that were present in the 2023.6.20241028 release.

Moving from this release to [2023.6.20241031](relnotes-2023.6.20241031.md) is only needed if affected by the `nodejs` package issue.

Upgrades from this release to future AL2023 releases is no different than normal. Recalling an AL2023 release involves directing customers away from updating to the recalled release, and instead directing updates to the next release (in this case, to [2023.6.20241031](relnotes-2023.6.20241031.md)).

## Major updates
<a name="major-updates-2023.6.20241010"></a>

This release represents an update to the sixth quarterly release of AL2023. AL2023 is the next generation of Amazon Linux. It comes with five years of support and brings features such as deterministic updates and better optimizations for Graviton processors into Amazon Linux. AL2023 is ready for production workloads, and you can start migrating from previous versions of Amazon Linux today.

**Notable updates**
+ The crash package was updated to version 8.0.4-2 to address an incompatibility with kernel-6.1.109-118.189 and newer. If you are using the recommended options to update Amazon Linux 2023, such as booting into an updated AMI or using the dnf upgrade feature, you will automatically receive an updated, compatible crash package. If you install security updates only and want to continue to use the crash utility, you must upgrade it to crash-8.0.4-2 or later.
+ The iproute2 package was updated to version 6.10.
+ The X11 subsystem received a major update, as well as the additon of `xterm`. Using a headless X11 server such as `Xvfb`, it is possible to use automated testing tools for graphical applications on AL2023. For running graphical applications on AL2023, remote X11 continues to be supported, enabling running graphical applications on AL2023, and having a local X11 Server be used as a display. The reference compositor for Wayland, `weston` was also added, including RDP support. Using the RDP functionality of `weston` needs to have a suitable security model layered on top of it. AL2023 does not currently include `Xwayland` to run X11 applications under Wayland.
+ PostgreSQL version 16 was added ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/516)).
+ The `mod_security` security module for the Apache HTTP Server was added ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/429)).
+ Tomcat version 10 was added ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/546)), along with `tomcat_native` (also [requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/568)).
+ `microdnf` (used in the [Minimal Container Image](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/linux/al2023/ug/minimal-container.html)) has been updated to version 3.10 ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/595)).
+ OpenVPN has been added ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/79)).
+ The `fail2ban` package has been added ([requested on GitHub](https://github.com/amazonlinux/amazon-linux-2023/issues/383)).
+ [Finch](https://runfinch.com/), an open source tool for local container development, has been added to AL2023, along with `soci-snapshotter`. Finch is also available for developers on macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Windows.
