<a name="user-driven-upgrades"></a>

 Applies to: Enterprise Edition

---
Intended audience: System administrators and Amazon Quick administrators

User-driven license upgrades allow users to seamlessly transition between license tiers as their needs grow. When users encounter a feature that requires a higher tier or reach their usage limits, Amazon Quick provides contextual upgrade prompts to help them continue their work without interruption.

**Note**
Depending on your organization's settings, upgrades may process automatically or require administrator approval.

## Overview
<a name="overview"></a>

User-driven license upgrades enable Amazon Quick users to request higher-tier licenses when they encounter features or reach usage limits that require additional capabilities. This self-service approach reduces friction in the user experience while maintaining administrative control over licensing decisions.

The upgrade process is designed to be contextual and non-disruptive. Users see upgrade prompts at the moment they need additional capabilities, allowing them to continue their work seamlessly after approval.

## Available upgrade paths
<a name="available-upgrade-paths"></a>

Users can request upgrades along the following paths:
+ **BI Reader to Professional:** Enables advanced analytics, custom visualizations, and enhanced sharing capabilities.
+ **Professional to Enterprise:** Unlocks enterprise features including advanced security, governance, and administrative controls.

Each upgrade path provides immediate access to new features upon approval, with billing changes taking effect according to your organization's billing cycle.

## Feature-based upgrades
<a name="feature-based-upgrades"></a>

When users attempt to access features not available in their current tier, Amazon Quick presents contextual upgrade prompts. These prompts explain the benefits of the higher tier and guide users through the upgrade request process.

Common scenarios that trigger feature-based upgrade prompts include:
+ Accessing advanced visualization types
+ Attempting to use AI-powered features
+ Trying to create or modify certain dashboard elements
+ Accessing enterprise security or governance features

## Threshold-based upgrades
<a name="threshold-based-upgrades"></a>

Users receive upgrade prompts when they approach or exceed usage limits for their current license tier. These prompts appear in context, allowing users to upgrade and continue their work without interruption.

Threshold-based upgrades are triggered by:
+ Reaching data source connection limits
+ Exceeding dashboard or analysis creation limits
+ Approaching user or sharing limits
+ Hitting storage or compute usage thresholds

The system provides clear information about current usage, limits, and the benefits of upgrading to the next tier.

# Managing upgrade requests
<a name="managing-upgrade-requests"></a>

 Applies to: Enterprise Edition

---
Intended audience: System administrators and Amazon Quick administrators

As an administrator, you can view and manage user license upgrade requests through the Amazon Quick admin console. This section describes how to approve, deny, or verify upgrade requests based on your organization's identity management setup.

## Viewing upgrade requests
<a name="viewing-upgrade-requests"></a>

To view pending upgrade requests, navigate to the User upgrades section in the admin console. The requests table displays the username, current role, requested role, request date, and available actions for each pending request.

**To view upgrade requests**

1. Sign in to the Amazon Quick console as an administrator.

1. Choose **Manage Amazon Quick** from the top right corner.

1. Navigate to the **User upgrades** section.

1. Review the pending requests in the table.

## Processing upgrade requests
<a name="processing-upgrade-requests"></a>

The process for handling upgrade requests varies depending on your organization's identity management setup.

### Processing requests for IdP identity type
<a name="idp-identity-requests"></a>

For organizations using Identity Provider (IdP) authentication, administrators can directly approve or deny requests.

**To process IdP upgrade requests**

1. In the upgrade requests table, choose **View details** for the request you want to process.

1. Review the request details in the modal that opens.

1. Choose one of the following options:
+ **Approve** — Grants the requested license upgrade immediately
+ **Deny** — Rejects the upgrade request

1. Confirm your selection. The system displays a success message and removes the processed request from the pending list.

### Processing requests for IAM Identity Center and Active Directory identity types
<a name="sso-ad-identity-requests"></a>

For organizations using IAM Identity Center or Active Directory, administrators must add users to the appropriate groups before verifying the upgrade.

**To process IAM Identity Center and Active Directory upgrade requests**

1. In the upgrade requests table, choose **View details** for the request you want to process.

1. Note the required group name(s) displayed in the modal.

1. Navigate to your IAM Identity Center or Active Directory management console.

1. Add the user to the required group for the requested license tier.

1. Return to the Amazon Quick admin console and choose **Verify**.

1. The system checks the user's group membership and completes the upgrade if verification succeeds.

Alternatively, you can choose **Deny** to reject the upgrade request without making any group changes.

## Understanding upgrade request statuses
<a name="upgrade-request-statuses"></a>

Upgrade requests can have the following statuses:
+ **Pending** — Request is awaiting administrator action
+ **Approved** — Request has been approved and the user's license has been upgraded
+ **Denied** — Request has been rejected by an administrator
+ **Verified** — For IAM Identity Center/AD setups, the user has been added to the required group and the upgrade is complete

# Monitoring upgrades
<a name="monitoring-upgrades"></a>

---
 Applies to: Enterprise Edition

---
Intended audience: System administrators and Amazon Quick administrators

Administrators can monitor user upgrades through:
+ **CloudTrail logs** — Provides audit trails of all upgrade requests and approvals.

## Billing considerations for administrators
<a name="billing-considerations"></a>
+ Users are billed for their highest license tier within each billing period.
+ **Prorated Billing:** When you upgrade a user subscription in Amazon QuickSuite, billing is prorated for the month of the upgrade. This means:

If you upgrade from BI Reader (\$13/month) to Professional (\$120/month), you're billed at the \$120/month rate from the time of upgrade until the end of that billing month.

If you then upgrade again from Professional (\$120/month) to Enterprise (\$140/month) within the same month, you're billed at the \$140/month rate from that second upgrade time until the end of the month.
