Connect / Client / start_chat_contact
start_chat_contact¶
- Connect.Client.start_chat_contact(**kwargs)¶
Initiates a flow to start a new chat for the customer. Response of this API provides a token required to obtain credentials from the CreateParticipantConnection API in the Connect Customer Participant Service.
When a new chat contact is successfully created, clients must subscribe to the participant’s connection for the created chat within 5 minutes. This is achieved by invoking CreateParticipantConnection with WEBSOCKET and CONNECTION_CREDENTIALS.
To receive connection information directly in the response, set
ConnectionTypeson the request. To initiate real-time message streaming when the chat is created, setChatStreamingConfigurationon the request. Both parameters are optional.A 429 error occurs in the following situations:
API rate limit is exceeded. API TPS throttling returns a
TooManyRequestsexception. The quota for concurrent active chats is exceeded. Active chat throttling returns a
LimitExceededException.
If you use the
ChatDurationInMinutesparameter and receive a 400 error, your account may not support the ability to configure custom chat durations. For more information, contact Amazon Web Services Support. For more information about chat, see the following topics in the Connect Customer Administrator Guide:

The content of the chat message. Maximum of 16,384 bytes for all content types (
text/plain,text/markdown,application/json, andapplication/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactive.response).Some messaging channels enforce lower limits. For channel-specific message size limits, see Chat message size limits by channel in the Amazon Connect Customer Administrator Guide.
ClientToken (string) –
A unique, case-sensitive identifier that you provide to ensure the idempotency of the request. If not provided, the Amazon Web Services SDK populates this field. For more information about idempotency, see Making retries safe with idempotent APIs.
This field is autopopulated if not provided.
ChatDurationInMinutes (integer) – The total duration of the newly started chat session. If not specified, the chat session duration defaults to 25 hour. The minimum configurable time is 60 minutes. The maximum configurable time is 10,080 minutes (7 days).
SupportedMessagingContentTypes (list) –
The supported chat message content types. Supported types are
text/plain,text/markdown,application/json,application/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactive, andapplication/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactive.response.Content types must always contain
text/plain. You can then put any other supported type in the list. For example, all the following lists are valid because they containtext/plain:[text/plain, text/markdown, application/json],[text/markdown, text/plain],[text/plain, application/json, application/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactive.response].Note
The type
application/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactiveis required to use the Show view flow block.(string) –
PersistentChat (dict) –
Enable persistent chats. For more information about enabling persistent chat, and for example use cases and how to configure for them, see Enable persistent chat.
RehydrationType (string) –
The contactId that is used for rehydration depends on the rehydration type. RehydrationType is required for persistent chat.
ENTIRE_PAST_SESSION: Rehydrates a chat from the most recently terminated past chat contact of the specified past ended chat session. To use this type, provide theinitialContactIdof the past ended chat session in thesourceContactIdfield. In this type, Connect Customer determines the most recent chat contact on the specified chat session that has ended, and uses it to start a persistent chat.FROM_SEGMENT: Rehydrates a chat from the past chat contact that is specified in thesourceContactIdfield.
The actual contactId used for rehydration is provided in the response of this API.
SourceContactId (string) –
The contactId from which a persistent chat session must be started.
RelatedContactId (string) –
The unique identifier for an Connect Customer contact. This identifier is related to the chat starting.
Note
You cannot provide data for both RelatedContactId and PersistentChat.
SegmentAttributes (dict) –
A set of system defined key-value pairs stored on individual contact segments using an attribute map. The attributes are standard Connect Customer attributes. They can be accessed in flows.
Attribute keys can include only alphanumeric, -, and _.
This field can be used to show channel subtype, such as
connect:Guide.Note
The types
application/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactiveandapplication/vnd.amazonaws.connect.message.interactive.responsemust be present in the SupportedMessagingContentTypes field of this API in order to setSegmentAttributesas { `` “connect:Subtype”: {“valueString” : “connect:Guide” }}``.(string) –
(dict) –
A value for a segment attribute. This is structured as a map where the key is
valueStringand the value is a string.ValueString (string) –
The value of a segment attribute.
ValueMap (dict) –
The value of a segment attribute.
(string) –
(dict) –
A value for a segment attribute. This is structured as a map where the key is
valueStringand the value is a string.
ValueInteger (integer) –
The value of a segment attribute.
ValueList (list) –
The value of a segment attribute. This is only supported for system-defined attributes, not for user-defined attributes.
(dict) –
A value for a segment attribute. This is structured as a map where the key is
valueStringand the value is a string.
ValueArn (string) –
The value of a segment attribute that has to be a valid ARN. This is only supported for system-defined attributes, not for user-defined attributes.
CustomerId (string) – The customer’s identification number. For example, the
CustomerIdmay be a customer number from your CRM.DisconnectOnCustomerExit (list) –
A list of participant types to automatically disconnect when the end customer ends the chat session, allowing them to continue through disconnect flows such as surveys or feedback forms.
(string) –
ConnectionTypes (list) –
The types of connection information to return in the response. This parameter is optional.
To receive connection information, specify one or both of the following values:
CONNECTION_CREDENTIALS: Returns a connection token.WEBSOCKET: Returns a websocket URL.
WEBSOCKETandCONNECTION_CREDENTIALSare the values this operation acts on. No other value returns connection information.Request
WEBSOCKETto get a URL the participant connects to directly. You do not need to call CreateParticipantConnection for it. RequestCONNECTION_CREDENTIALSon its own and the response returns a connection token but no websocket URL.If you omit this parameter, the response has no connection information.
Note
When you start a new chat contact and the information you request cannot be returned, StartChatContact returns an error rather than a response that omits it. When you retry a request with the same
ClientToken, the response repeats the original contact and can omit a websocket URL if the chat has already ended.(string) –
ChatStreamingConfiguration (dict) –
The streaming configuration, such as the Amazon SNS streaming endpoint. Use it to initiate real-time message streaming when the chat is created. This parameter is optional.
Setting this parameter returns a
StreamingIdin the response, and you do not need to call StartContactStreaming.Note
This parameter starts message streaming only. The response does not include connection information, and setting this parameter does not remove the need to call CreateParticipantConnection.
StreamingEndpointArn (string) – [REQUIRED]
The Amazon Resource Name (ARN) of the standard Amazon SNS topic. The Amazon Resource Name (ARN) of the streaming endpoint that is used to publish real-time message streaming for chat conversations.
